The red door may have closed, but apparently The Further wasn't finished with us.

Insidious: Out of the Further is officially in theaters today, August 21, bringing the supernatural horror franchise back to the big screen for its sixth installment and introducing a dangerous new connection between our world and the realm of the dead.

Written and directed by Jacob Chase, the sequel follows Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the same house where she grew up. She soon discovers that she possesses an unusual ability: Gemma can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls that has haunted the Insidious franchise from the beginning.

Except Gemma can do something even more terrifying than simply enter it. She can bring things back.

Once the demons within The Further realize what she's capable of, Gemma becomes a doorway into our world. Something evil begins pursuing her, and what initially seems like an extraordinary supernatural ability quickly becomes a nightmare as the entities on the other side recognize their opportunity to cross over.

The new film stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, while longtime Insidious fans also get a familiar face with Lin Shaye returning to the franchise.

Out of the Further follows 2023's Insidious: The Red Door and marks the sixth movie in the series, which began back in 2010. While this chapter introduces a new central character and story, The Further remains at the heart of the franchise's mythology.

And honestly, voluntarily entering The Further was already a terrible idea. Giving everything inside a way to follow you home somehow makes it considerably worse.

Insidious: Out of the Further is playing in theaters now.

Just remember, if you see something standing in the corner of your room after the movie...

Maybe leave the lights on.
