Imagine waking up one morning, walking toward your front door... and realizing your family can't leave the house.
Not because someone locked you inside.
Not because there's a killer waiting outside.
You simply can't get out.
That's the mystery at the center of Netflix's new science fiction thriller The Last House, starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, and it's streaming now on Netflix as of today, August 7.
The setup is surprisingly simple.
A family of four suddenly finds themselves sealed inside their own home by an inexplicable force, with no apparent way to escape and no clear explanation for who, or what, is responsible.
At first, being stuck at home might not sound like the worst fate imaginable.
You have food. Electricity. Running water. Entertainment. Everything you'd normally need is sitting right there.
Except none of those things last forever.
Your Home Is Only Safe While the Supplies Last
As the family remains trapped, the conveniences they normally take for granted begin disappearing.
Modern luxuries go first.
Then the essentials start running out.
Food, water, supplies and everything else necessary to keep four people alive suddenly become finite resources, forcing the family to rethink how they use what remains.
And that's where the premise starts getting particularly uncomfortable.
Your house is supposed to be the place where you feel safest. But what happens when that safe space becomes your entire world?
The family has to become increasingly resourceful while trying to survive long enough to understand what is keeping them trapped.
Is somebody doing this to them?
Is it something?
And perhaps the more terrifying question...
How long are they going to be inside?
Survival Meets Science Fiction
The Last House is officially described as a science fiction thriller, but its premise dips heavily into the kind of survival and mystery territory horror fans should recognize.
There doesn't need to be a masked killer chasing everyone through the hallway when simply opening the front door becomes impossible.
The threat here is the unknown.
As resources disappear, the family not only has to work together to survive, but also figure out how to outsmart whatever force has turned their home into a prison.
That creates an interesting little nightmare because there isn't an obvious monster to fight.
You can't exactly punch an invisible barrier.
At least, I'm assuming you can't.
I'd probably try once.

Directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Matthew Robinson, The Last House stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura and runs approximately 112 minutes.
The film is rated PG-13 and arrives exclusively on Netflix.
If you're into contained thrillers where characters have to solve an impossible situation while their options slowly disappear, this sounds like a pretty easy weekend watch.
Especially because the premise immediately gives you a question you want answered:
Why can't they leave?
And I'm not sure I'd want to find out the answer.
